2-5-15
Today we are stuck riding out the storm at anchor in Rodriguez Bay with 20nm wind gusting to 35-35 at times. Not exactly a calm bay but also not as bad as being in the ocean with 6-8ft waves. So far so good with the anchor holding, we have only moved a boat or two since we anchored, we have dragged a bit but luckily we are not near anyone that we would run into. We could drag for a mile without any problems if we needed to but thank goodness we seem to be ok for now. The weather sadly is predicted to be the same for the next couple of days 15-20nm winds with rough seas. So it looks like we will be hanging out in the boat doing blogging, reading and playing chess, could be worst. The only problem is our Miami due date, the Boat show starts around 2-9 so that is 4 days from now but it will take us 1-2 days to get there, so we are waiting out for a weather window. Needless to say we are not having as much fun as we thought we would at the point in our cruising. We are learning a lot for sure, how to ride out a storm in a semi exposed anchorage, how to anchor in 20+ nm winds, how to change the things we can and accept the things we can not. However, it would have been nicer to be held up in an Marina in a nice town, so we could get off the boat and go to town here and there. But I guess we are now learning how to entertain ourselves and guess what no internet, but Word still works so I can blog as much as I want. I will upload this to the blog later when I can connect with the internet. For now we shall just hang out and talk to each other. This season has not been what we thought it was going to be when we started out. The first month we spent with the boat in the shop getting fixed, new through-hulls x 6, refrigerator flush repair, AIS installation for monitoring other boats in the area, new mast grounding, holding tank monitor and battery monitoring system and oh yes don’t forget the heat exchange gasket. We have spent a lot of time and money on this boat to not be having fun is a shame. Hopefully things will improve when we get to the Bahamas, otherwise we are not sure if we will continue this boating adventure next season. We shall see how things work out, we know for sure we are not in charge here, we have plans but how and when they happen is sometimes out of our hands, nature answers to no one. How much of this is the effects of El Nino we are not sure, but the Floridians tell us that it is very unusual to have so many storms this late in the year. We thought we were escaping the bad weather that Carlsbad is having to come to sunny Florida but that is not true, we have barely seen the sun since we have been here. Still hoping to get to Miami for the show and then Brad has a flight scheduled for business in the Dominican Republic around that same time for a day trip to talk to a 2nd source Model Building company that he may be able to use in the future. The Philippines guys are not keeping up with the orders very well and customers are complaining. So if he could send some orders to the Dominican Republic it would reduce the about of work for the Philippines and help his business all around. So as we speak, Brad is busy trying to figure out how we can get to where we want to go in the time period we have to work with and the weather issues. There is no simple solution I’m afraid. Not to mention his friend Ed is suppose to be coming to the boat in Miami, so it is a bummer that we are stuck in Key Largo but Sail La Vie such is life.
