Man O War Cay Boat Building Island
Man O War Cay is a great little island with a tremendous boating history. The Abaco dinghy was the Bahamian Model T. They ranged in size from 9 to 20 feet long and were used for fishing, sponging, chonching and general inter-island transportation Many an Abaconian marriage was built on the ability of a gentleman to sail his dinghy to a neighboring cay. Winer Malone of Hope Town has been one of the principal builders of Abaco dinghies during the last half of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first. He shuns power tools and builds his boats entirely with hand tools, some of which he has made himself. Mr. Maurice Albury was one of the principal dinghy builders at Man O War Cay, during the 1970 and Joe Albury of Man O War continued to build dinghies during the late twentieth century. Andy Albury now builds the dinghy model replicas. The boats are sailed for pleasure and are also raced in part of the racing program sponsored by the Hope Town Sailing Club. Great Harbour Boat Restoration on Fry's Mangrove, Elbow Cay specializes in re-building dinghies.
