Compass Cay the land of the pet sharks
Nurse sharks to be exact, they love Compass Cay Marina. They get fed well: crab, fish etc. They are friendly, they love to be petted and
like to swim with people. There is a
small dock that the marina built to accommodate the nurse sharks. They swim up to
the dock to sleep and you must move them out of the way to walk down the
dock. The Exuma Sound side of Compass
Cay is very rocky with a beautiful, long, white, curving beach. Compass Cay is
a nature reserve, it is located rig ht next to the Exuma Cays Land & Sea
Park. Through the park, there are beautiful reefs and underwater life for
snorkelers and divers. There are snorkeling guides and map as well as hiking
maps at the Sea Park headquarters on Warderick Wells. In 1958, the Bahamian government set aside
the 176-square mile area know as the Exuma Cay Land and Sea Park as a land and
marine-protected area. The park is 22 miles long and extends 4 nautical miles
on either side of the cays. The park is
a “no Take zone, by both land and sea; nothing living or dead can be removed
from the park. No fishing, conching, lobstering, shelling and hunting.
We are hoping to be in the park in the next few days. Cambridge Cay is the closest moorings to
where we are located now on Compass Cay, so we are aiming to move over as soon
as the storm goes by.
The marina is completely full due to the storm heading our
way. Hopefully one of the last ones we will see for a while. It would be nice to have calm seas while we
are visiting the Sea Park.
Mega Yachts are everywhere, we have not seen so many beautiful
boats place since Miami or Fort Lauderdale. They are roughing it here in
Compass Cay Marina.
After leaving the park we will head towards Staniel Cay to
feed the pigs and then over to the Grotto. Today we snorkeled 3 times, one on
Compass Cay, then the Coral Gardens on Cambridge Cay and the Cave. What an adventure we had, saw several giant
size barracuda, 10’ or so. Oh and let’s
not forget the petting of the sharks we did this morning. We are really living on the edge here in the
Exumas…
